The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced plans to support students facing academic challenges by considering waivers for those in extra years of study. The decision comes in response to a recent suicide attempt by a 200-level student struggling academically, prompting compassionate measures from the institution.
An internal memo from the university’s Senate Division, dated November 1, 2024, revealed that a special Committee of Deans was convened to address the incident. The memo, signed by Deputy Registrar M.S. Oluwajoba, indicated that the student, who had transferred from Pharmacy to Biology Education, attempted suicide on October 16. The incident was escalated by the Dean of the Faculty to higher authorities for urgent attention.
To prevent further cases, the committee recommended increased support from faculty and departmental boards, alongside encouragement for staff to offer guidance. An earlier circular suggested that students with one or two pending courses be allowed to graduate on compassionate grounds, provided it doesn’t alter their degree class.
University spokesperson Abiodun Olanrewaju confirmed the institution’s stance, emphasizing the need to minimize suicide risks related to academic stress. He highlighted that, given the country’s challenges, the university sees this decision as a humane measure, allowing students to move forward without risking their mental health over extended academic years.
