Obasanjo Pays Tribute to Jimmy Carter: “A Humanist Par Excellence”

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has described late ex-U.S. President Jimmy Carter as a "humanist par excellence" and the only non-African leader to visit General Sani Abacha in a bid to secure his release from prison. In a tribute titled “Jimmy Carter: The Departure of a Titan”, read during a memorial service in Abeokuta on Sunday, Obasanjo highlighted Carter’s pivotal role in securing his transfer from detention to house arrest in 1995.

Obasanjo drew parallels between their shared humble beginnings and military backgrounds, recounting Carter’s unwavering commitment to Africa. He praised Carter’s leadership during the fight against apartheid and colonial rule, contrasting his empathy with the indifference of his predecessor, Gerald Ford. Carter’s 1978 state visit to Nigeria, the first by a sitting U.S. President, further underscored his dedication to African progress.

Reflecting on Carter’s humility and selflessness, Obasanjo revealed how media mogul Ted Turner also rallied behind Carter’s efforts to support him during his imprisonment. He expressed deep gratitude for their friendship, recalling Carter’s personal and diplomatic interventions on his behalf.

As he bid farewell, Obasanjo celebrated Carter’s enduring legacy, saying, “I would miss a great and true friend, but I know we shall meet again in Paradise. May his soul rest in peace.” Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at 100 years old.
