Obi to Nigerians: Hold Leaders Accountable on Power Promises

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to hold President Bola Tinubu accountable in the next election, urging voters to remember the president’s own campaign promise on electricity.

In a post shared on his X account, Obi recalled that Tinubu had pledged during the 2023 campaign that he should not be re-elected if he failed to deliver stable electricity within four years.

Quoting the president, Obi wrote: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.”

The former Anambra State governor argued that the condition set by Tinubu has not been met, pointing to what he described as a decline in power supply and a rise in electricity tariffs since 2023.

According to him, Nigeria’s power generation has dropped from over 4,000 megawatts when Tinubu assumed office, with current output averaging below that level. At the same time, he noted that electricity costs have increased, placing additional strain on citizens.

Obi also highlighted Nigeria’s low per capita electricity consumption, putting it at 144 kilowatt-hours compared to the African average of 617 kWh. He described the gap as a clear indicator of the country’s ongoing energy challenges.

He further referenced a recent incident at Jos airport, where Tinubu reportedly cut short a visit due to a lack of electricity, using it to illustrate what he sees as a disconnect between leaders and the everyday realities faced by Nigerians.

“At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it,” Obi said.

He urged Nigerians to use future elections as an opportunity to demand better leadership, stressing that the electricity crisis reflects deeper issues of governance and accountability.

“Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders — those lacking the capacity and compassion — who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises,” he added.
