The Ogun State Government has issued a stern warning to contractors and residents against damaging water infrastructure, stating that offenders will face arrest and prosecution.
The Ogun State Water Corporation (OSWC), through a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Water Resources, Damilola Otubanjo, condemned the deliberate destruction of water facilities.
Otubanjo particularly accused road contractors of damaging underground water pipes during construction without making efforts to replace them.
Aging Infrastructure and Recurrent Damage
She explained that the state is already struggling with aged and deteriorating water facilities, a situation worsened by repeated destruction by contractors.
"We are fully committed to rehabilitating and upgrading our water supply network, one pipe at a time, but our efforts to enhance the water sector and ensure the provision of potable water to residents are being hampered by the insensitive activities of road contractors," she stated.
Consequences of Infrastructure Damage
The constant destruction of underground pipelines has led to:
- Increased Non-Revenue Water (NRW), resulting in significant financial losses.
- Escalating repair costs, diverting funds meant for infrastructure upgrades.
- Risk of contamination, as broken pipes expose treated water to pollutants, posing serious health hazards.
- Disruptions in water supply, depriving communities of clean drinking water.
- Loss of revenue, as damaged pipes lead to wasted water and financial losses.
- Reputational damage to the Water Corporation, creating false perceptions of negligence.
Government’s Response and New Measures
The Ogun State Government has vowed to take strict measures against those responsible for infrastructure damage, including:
- Legal action against contractors and individuals who destroy water facilities.
- Stronger collaboration with road construction firms to ensure pre-construction assessments of water pipelines.
- Enhanced monitoring and rapid response teams to swiftly address any damage.
- Increased public awareness campaigns on the importance of protecting water infrastructure.
Final Warning to Contractors and Residents
The government has reiterated its stance that such damages will no longer be tolerated and urged all contractors to exercise caution during construction projects.
With these measures, the Ogun State Water Corporation aims to protect vital infrastructure, reduce water supply disruptions, and ensure sustainable water service delivery to residents.
