Ogun Hands Olumo Rock Management to Whatadeal Africa to Boost Tourism

The Ogun State Government has officially handed over the management of the newly renovated Olumo Rock Tourist Centre to Whatadeal Africa, in a move aimed at improving operations, increasing revenue, and positioning the historic site as a top global tourist destination.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Sesan Fagbayi, announced the concession on Friday after signing the agreement with the Managing Director of Whatadeal Africa, Fela Bank-Olemoh, at the Olumo Rock site in Abeokuta.

Fagbayi explained that the decision reflects the Dapo Abiodun administration’s commitment to public-private partnerships as a way to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the state’s tourism potential. He noted that Olumo Rock had undergone major renovations completed in July, significantly improving its facilities and appeal.

“Before the renovation, Olumo Rock was generating less than ₦50 to ₦60 million annually. Since the upgrade, revenue has improved, and we believe handing it over to professionals will further unlock its full potential,” he said.

According to him, the concession will help improve the site’s global visibility, attract more visitors, and stimulate economic activities around the area, benefiting residents and businesses alike.

Speaking at the event, Bank-Olemoh praised the state government for embracing private sector expertise and assured that Whatadeal Africa would operate the site to international standards. He disclosed plans to more than double the number of annual visitors, from about 70,000 to over 150,000.

“Our goal is to make Olumo Rock the most visited tourist destination in Nigeria. When people think of visiting Africa or Nigeria, Olumo Rock should be on their must-visit list,” he said.

He added that the company would involve local residents in daily operations, introduce new tourism programmes, provide insurance coverage for visitors, and leverage its already operational ticketing platform to improve access and accountability.

Governor Dapo Abiodun had earlier inaugurated the renovated tourist centre in July after it was temporarily closed in April 2025. At the time, he announced that entry would be free for the first two months to allow the public experience the upgraded facility.

The renovated centre now features a galleria showcasing artworks and images of notable Nigerians, a gazebo, a restaurant offering local and continental dishes, adire shops, modern elevators powered by a standby generator, and both online and onsite ticketing systems.

Governor Abiodun said the upgrades and innovations were designed to boost local commerce, empower young people, and strengthen Ogun State’s cultural and creative economy.

Tourism experts have long noted that Nigeria is rich in cultural and natural attractions but has struggled to fully harness them due to challenges such as insecurity, weak infrastructure, and inconsistent policies. The Ogun State Government believes that partnerships like this could help change that narrative and unlock tourism as a strong contributor to economic

growth.
