The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a case of arson allegedly committed by cattle herders who reportedly set fire to a 35-acre cassava farm in Adao Village, near Alabata, Abeokuta.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Friday, the spokesperson for the command, CSP Omolola Odutola, revealed that the farm owner, Mr. Ogunbayo Adewale, lodged a complaint on February 20, 2025, after discovering the destruction of his farmland the previous day.

Farm Set Ablaze, Cattle Caught Grazing

According to Odutola, Adewale reported that he arrived at his farm on February 19, 2025, at around 4:40 PM, only to find the entire farmland engulfed in flames. Additionally, he witnessed herds of cattle grazing on the farm, with many cassava plants uprooted.

"Upon sighting him, the herders commanded the cattle to flee, but he managed to apprehend one of the cows, which he brought to the police station as evidence," Odutola stated.

Police Deploy Strategies to Prevent Tribal Conflict

Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer of FUNAAB Harmony took swift action, deploying grassroots policing strategies to de-escalate tensions and prevent a potential tribal conflict.

Preliminary investigations identified the owner of the seized cow, while Adewale estimated the damage to his farmland at N27.3 million.

To ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation, the case has been transferred to the surveillance unit for further inquiries and necessary legal action.

Police Assure Justice, Urge Calm Amid Rising Tensions

Odutola assured the public that the police command is committed to ensuring justice is served and maintaining peace in the affected community.

“We urge all parties to remain calm while investigations are ongoing. The command remains dedicated to upholding law and order, preventing inter-group conflicts, and protecting the rights of all citizens," she emphasized.

The incident has sparked concerns over farmer-herder conflicts, a recurring issue in various parts of Nigeria, with many calling for more decisive action to prevent further escalations.
