Ogun State Government Shuts Down Obada Grammar School Over Student’s Death Due to Alleged Corporal Punishment

The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi, Obada, following the tragic death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student, allegedly resulting from corporal punishment administered by a teacher. The teacher involved has been arrested and suspended, while the school's principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, received a suspension for allowing corporal punishment in violation of state regulations.

In a statement by Mr. Lekan Adeniran, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, it was announced that a panel will investigate the circumstances surrounding Arijo’s death, with the governor pledging that any responsible parties will face full legal consequences.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, along with senior state education officials, visited Arijo’s family to extend condolences and gather information about the incident. The delegation presented a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 to the family, reiterating the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation and to upholding student safety across schools. Local police also assured the family of justice and enhanced security measures for students.
