Ogun’s First Lady Emeritus, Lucia Onabanjo, Dies at 100

Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has passed away at the age of 100.

The news of her death was announced on Tuesday by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, who disclosed that the respected family matriarch died peacefully on Monday.

In a statement released by the family, they expressed deep sorrow while also giving thanks to God for her long and fulfilled life. The statement described her as a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was marked by love, strength, and strong faith.

“Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11. We are grateful to God for the enduring legacy she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement read in part.

Madam Onabanjo was married to Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, who served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor between 1979 and 1983. He was also a renowned journalist, remembered for his influential weekly column, Ayekooto, before his death in 1990.

Her passing marks the end of an era for the Onabanjo family and for many in Ogun State who admired her quiet strength and dignity.
