Okuama-Ewu

The community of Okuama-Ewu in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has identified the individuals allegedly shot dead by Nigerian Army troops during their incursion into the community. This incident occurred following the killing of 17 military personnel in the area on March 14. The community has also initiated a fresh N151 billion lawsuit against the Federal Government, Attorney-General of the Federation, Nigerian Army, Chief of Defence Staff, Nigerian Police, and Commissioner of Police, Delta State, at the Federal High Court in Warri.

Among the 11 named individuals purportedly killed by the troops are Mr. Wilson Eshebi Okorume, Mr. Joseph Ikpitere Ejomafuvwe, Mr. Teddy Ufuoma, Mr. Avwarariko Akpoprobaro, and Mr. Tega Osiko Oyibo. The community leader, Mr. Bernard Esegba, and one of the applicants in the lawsuit, highlighted that the troops destroyed and burned down 413 houses, seven churches, shrines, and other properties in the community during the incursion.

In their legal action, the community sought 24 reliefs, including a declaration that the occupation of Okuama by the Nigerian Army is beyond their authority, and that the declaration of individuals as wanted persons in connection with the killing of military personnel amounts to defamation. They also demanded a halt to the military's occupation, an investigation into the incident, and the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the community.

The community's lawsuit underscores the severity of the situation and seeks redress for the loss of lives and destruction of property. It highlights the need for accountability and justice in addressing the aftermath of the tragic events in Okuama-Ewu.
