OMICRON: AGGREGATING NIGERIA’S FIGHT BACK

The omicron variant is a variant of SAR COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This new but stormy variant was first reported to the UN from South Africa on Nov 26 and the WHO designated it as a variant of concern and named it omicron, the 15th letter in the Greek Alphabet.

The British Government consequently elected to place Nigeria and some other African countries on the travel Red List. Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, insisted on he action was tantamount to a travel apartheid. This is also the reaction of both UN secretary Gutteres and the Head of Anglican Commission, Sir Justin Welby for the records, Nigeria along with South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Losotho, Mozambique, Malawi, and Zamabia are all on the UK travel Red List.

The Uk government we are on that list because its analysis suggests a strong indication of omicron. In a dramatic turn of events, the Federal Government of Nigeria, will from this morning Dec 14, restrict airlines coming from Canada, UK and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to touch down here. Aviation Minister Capt Hadi Sivika announced the decision on Sunday, in Lagos. The action, he said was a fight back. International diplomacy admonishes caution at a time like this.
