The omicron variant is a variant of SAR COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This new but stormy variant was first reported to the UN from South Africa on Nov 26 and the WHO designated it as a variant of concern and named it omicron, the 15th letter in the Greek Alphabet.
The British Government consequently elected to place Nigeria and some other African countries on the travel Red List.
