Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, has described those agitating for the removal of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office as “power-hungry politicians” who feel politically displaced.
Onanuga made the remark in a statement on Monday via his official X handle, while reacting to comments by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday night.
The presidential aide accused El-Rufai of leading the campaign despite previously admitting that four years was not enough for any leader to effect “meaningful changes.”
“Nasir El-Rufai confesses here that four years is not enough for a political office holder to make ‘meaningful changes’. Yet he is at the forefront of the gang of political desperados plotting President Tinubu’s ouster, just two years into his tenure. What a contradiction!” Onanuga wrote.
He contrasted Tinubu’s administration with what he described as the failures of “political laggards and underachievers” who once governed states like Anambra, Rivers, and Kaduna. According to him, Tinubu and his team have made “meaningful changes” in less than two years, positioning Nigeria on the path to prosperity.
Onanuga highlighted some of the government’s achievements, including:
-
Growth in foreign reserves
-
Harmonisation of the exchange rate
-
Four consecutive months of inflation decline
-
Strong performance of the stock market
He noted that the All-Share Index (ASI) had surged from 53,000 points to over 140,000 points, creating more than ₦26 trillion in additional wealth for investors.
The presidential aide also cited reforms in education and social welfare, such as the NELFUND student loan scheme and cash transfers to vulnerable households. He added that state and local governments were receiving higher allocations from the federation account, enabling them to fund capital projects and create jobs.
“The governors said they have never had it so good,” he remarked.
Onanuga insisted that the push for Tinubu’s removal was borne out of desperation and irrelevance on the part of certain politicians.
“Yet, these power-hungry politicians want the President, who has achieved so much, to be removed, all because they have become politically displaced and irrelevant. May they never succeed in their plot against our nation and people,” he stated.

“Please save the video. We shall confront Nasir with it when electioneering starts.”
