Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has explained his decision to reduce the monthly wage award for civil servants from N35,000 to N15,000. The reduction, he stated, was necessary to enable his administration to fund the N35,000 wage award approved for workers of state-owned tertiary institutions.
The governor's approval of the N35,000 wage award for tertiary institution workers followed a meeting with heads of these institutions and union leaders last week in Akure. The award, which will run for six months, is set to commence this month (June 2024).
According to Governor Aiyedatiwa, the inability of the tertiary institutions to pay the award from their increased subventions necessitated his intervention. The reduction in civil servants' wage award will provide the necessary resources to fund the tertiary institution workers' award.
Pensioners in the state are also receiving a N10,000 monthly wage award, the governor revealed in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.
