Ondo Governorship Election: Heavy Security Deployed as Electorates Prepare to Vote

Ondo

As Ondo State gears up for its governorship election, a significant security presence blankets Akure and adjoining towns to ensure a peaceful process. Voters face a choice between incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Hon. Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Out of 2,053,061 registered voters, 1,793,914 citizens with Permanent Voter Cards are expected to cast their ballots, a notable increase from the 2020 election’s 1,478,460 eligible voters. Enhanced voter registration saw 58,708 new voters, while 3,132 individuals transferred registrations into or within the state.

Sensitive election materials have been distributed across local government areas under stringent security measures, closely monitored by party agents.

For the first time in recent history, minimal violence preceded the election. While no major clashes were reported during campaigns, an isolated incident in Idanre saw seven PDP members hospitalized following an attack.

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbedokun has deployed 22,239 police officers, supported by 8,500 personnel from other security agencies, to ensure a secure election environment. Deputy Inspector General of Police Abiodun Alabi emphasized the commitment to a level playing field and strict enforcement of the Electoral Act.

“Our officers will ensure election materials and officials are protected and provide contingency plans to address any crisis. Electoral offenders will be prosecuted,” Alabi stated.

This election could mark a turning point in Ondo State’s political and electoral history, with hopes for a peaceful and transparent outcome.
