Nigerians woke up to a mix of sports drama, political tension and tragic news making the headlines, despite the Super Eagles’ impressive win at the AFCON.

During Nigeria’s 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen came under fire from fans after a heated exchange with teammate Ademola Lookman. The incident, which happened in the 63rd minute, saw Osimhen openly scold Lookman on the pitch. Meanwhile, tragedy struck in the United Kingdom as a Nigerian man, Ucheena Okirie, was stabbed to death at a residential address in Norwich. British police have arrested a Congolese national, Benjamin Katabana, in connection with the killing, and investigations are ongoing.

In a more positive development, Nigeria has been ranked the fifth best English-speaking country in Africa in a new continental assessment. The ranking reflects the country’s strong presence in education, media and official communication, reinforcing its role as one of Africa’s major English-language hubs.
