Suspected bandits, numbering in the dozens, launched a deadly assault on Zurak village in Bashar District of Wase local government area, Plateau State. The attack, which occurred around 7 pm on Monday, resulted in the deaths of over 40 residents, including vigilantes, and left several others injured. The gunmen also set numerous houses on fire during their rampage, causing widespread destruction.
Sahpi’i Sambo, a youth leader in the area, confirmed the incident, stating that the bandits arrived on motorcycles, with two riders per bike, and began shooting indiscriminately at the residents with sophisticated weapons. "More than 40 people were killed while many others were injured. Residents of the village have fled to neighbouring communities for safety. As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was a deadly attack," Sambo said.
Hamza, a resident of the area, revealed that Zurak village has long been plagued by banditry, with the bandits often targeting the local mining company. On Monday night, a large group of bandits invaded the community, demanding their usual tax. When the residents, particularly those near the mining company, refused to pay, the situation escalated into a violent confrontation. The bandits threatened to annihilate the villagers, resulting in a gun battle and further bloodshed.
Efforts to reach the spokespersons of the state police command, DSP Alabo Alfred, and OPSH Major Samson were unsuccessful at the time of this report. Residents continue to live in fear as they seek refuge in neighbouring communities, hoping for the arrival of security forces to restore peace and order in the area.
