The Oyo State government has urged calm among the parties involved in the ongoing crisis at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, and has called for security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident to determine the root cause and ensure appropriate action is taken. The Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, made this appeal in a statement on Tuesday, May 28.
Prof. Adelabu mentioned that the state government has been in discussions with the university's management to find lasting solutions to the crisis. He emphasized the commitment of Governor Seyi Makinde's administration to providing a peaceful environment conducive to academic excellence. The commissioner urged students to adhere to the rules and regulations set by their institutions and to avoid activities that could jeopardize their futures.
Prof. Adelabu also called on the university's management to enhance security measures on campus to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
This call to action follows the tragic death of Alex Timileyi, a 200-level engineering student, who was beaten to death by his colleagues inside a hostel known as Shepherd Inn on the university premises. The incident occurred on Saturday after accusations that Timileyi had stolen a mobile phone.
Currently, no fewer than 12 individuals are in police custody undergoing investigation. The university has declared three days of mourning, fasting, and prayer in response to the tragic event.
