The Oyo State council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government, threatening to embark on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.
In a letter addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde, the council highlighted issues affecting the welfare and career progression of nurses working with the state government. These include staff shortages, incorrect notional dates on promotion letters, and the implementation of the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure.
The ultimatum, which began on May 2, 2024, will end on May 21, 2024. If their demands are not met by then, the nurses will commence an indefinite strike starting May 22, Wednesday midnight.
The demands also include mass recruitment of nurses and midwives to address staff shortages, correction of wrong notional dates on promotion letters, and adoption of the 25 per cent CONHESS adjustment circular for nurses and midwives working with the Oyo State Government.
Other demands include financial implementation of 2018 to 2022 promotions, hazard allowances, and career progression for nurses and midwives. The council also demands the payment of withheld salaries from January/February 2011 and uniform allowances in line with public service rules.
The council emphasized that several letters have been written to the government without a positive response, leading to the ultimatum. If their requests are not granted within the stipulated timeframe, the council will direct its members to proceed on an indefinite strike.
