Following the official presentation of the Staff and Instrument of Office by Governor Seyi Makinde, the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has commenced the mandatory 21 days of traditional rites for his ascension to the throne.
Oba Owoade proceeded to Oyo Town on Monday to meet the people of the ancient city, where preparations for his arrival have been marked by a suspension of trading activities and widespread celebrations. Key locations, including the historic Akesan Market, have been closed as residents line the streets to welcome their new monarch.
The Iyaloja of Oyo, Alhaja Adijat Bakare, highlighted the cultural significance of the event, emphasizing that the closure of markets aligns with the customs of the Oyo people. She expressed excitement about the new Alaafin's reign, describing it as a symbol of unity and honour for the town.
Governor Makinde, during the official presentation ceremony in Ibadan, praised the significance of the Alaafin’s stool to the Yoruba race and affirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness in the selection process. He warned against attempts to destabilize Oyo's traditional institution, assuring that those involved in corrupt practices during the selection process would face consequences unless pardoned by the new monarch.
The 21-day traditional rites mark a critical phase in Oba Owoade’s ascension, solidifying his place in the history of Oyo as he assumes his role as the custodian of the town’s rich heritage.
