Parents Storm Finance Ministry Over 16 Months Unpaid Scholarships for Students Abroad

Parents of Nigerian students studying abroad on government scholarships on Monday blocked the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, demanding the immediate payment of long-overdue allowances owed to their children.

The protesters said their children—who are enrolled in various Bilateral Education Agreements and other scholarship programmes—have not received their stipends for 16 months. They also noted that an additional eight-month shortfall has yet to be settled.

According to them, many of the affected students are struggling to survive abroad, with some reportedly facing accommodation issues, visa challenges, and mounting debts due to the unpaid funds.

The parents called on the government to urgently intervene, saying the delay is jeopardising their children’s welfare and academic progress.
