PDP Factions Resume Peace Talks Ahead of National Convention

The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be easing, as rival factions have resumed reconciliation talks ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for March 29–30, 2026.

A bloc led by Tanimu Turaki, with backing from several PDP governors, confirmed that fresh efforts to unite aggrieved members began earlier this week. Speaking in Abuja, Turaki said the move followed advice from the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, which urged parties in the dispute to explore peaceful resolution.

According to him, the party’s Board of Trustees set up a high-level committee to engage opposing members and address lingering issues affecting unity. As a sign of goodwill, the National Working Committee postponed key meetings and toned down confrontational rhetoric.

Turaki noted that while they expected similar gestures from the other side, tensions had at times been escalated by harsh public statements. However, he revealed that leaders from both camps have now “broken the ice” and are actively working toward a lasting solution.

He urged party supporters to remain calm and avoid actions that could disrupt the peace process, expressing confidence that the PDP would still present candidates for upcoming elections.

“We are ready to make sacrifices for the sake of the party. Peace is always better than conflict, and we believe reconciliation is achievable,” he said.

Turaki also disclosed that ongoing court cases between both factions would be withdrawn once an agreement is reached, stressing that out-of-court settlements remain the best path to restoring unity.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dismissed claims that the party is divided. He insisted that disagreements do not amount to a split and maintained that the PDP remains one united entity.

“There is only one PDP. People may have issues, but that does not mean there are factions,” Wike said, adding that reconciliation efforts can continue alongside preparations for the convention.

The renewed dialogue comes after months of internal disputes, legal battles, and leadership disagreements that have threatened the party’s stability. With the convention drawing near, many party members are hopeful that the ongoing talks will finally bring an end to the crisis and reposition the PDP for future elections.
