Strong indications suggest that more governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may switch allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

Insiders link the potential defections to unresolved crises within the PDP at various levels, coupled with a series of interactions between some PDP governors and President Bola Tinubu. These include visits to Tinubu in Lagos and invitations extended to him for commissioning projects in PDP-led states, fueling speculation of political realignment.

Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, is reportedly spearheading efforts to court these governors, aiming to expand APC’s influence nationwide.

Governors such as Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Peter Mbah of Enugu State have drawn attention for their overtures toward Tinubu’s administration. Oborevwori recently pledged support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while Mbah earned the president’s commendation for his leadership and developmental strides during a visit to Enugu.

Meanwhile, the speculation has raised concerns within PDP ranks. A group of Delta State PDP leaders has urged Governor Oborevwori to address rumors of his alleged plans to defect to the APC. In an open letter, they demanded clarification, emphasizing the need for transparency to reassure party members of his commitment to the PDP.

As these developments unfold, the PDP faces growing pressure to address internal discord and retain its key stakeholders, while the APC leverages its influence to consolidate power ahead of the next electoral cycle.
