Three major opposition parties — the Peoples Democratic Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, and African Democratic Congress — were absent from the ballot papers used in Saturday’s Kano State House of Assembly by-election, according to a report by Arise News.
The by-election is being held to fill two vacant seats in the Kano State House of Assembly following the deaths of the former lawmakers last year. The deceased legislators were members of the NNPP before their passing.
Arise News reported that nine political parties were listed on the ballot papers, but the PDP, NNPP and ADC were notably excluded. The absence of the three prominent opposition parties has raised questions among observers and political stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the exercise has reportedly witnessed low voter turnout across several polling units in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, despite the early deployment of officials by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

As of mid-morning, many polling units reportedly had only a handful of voters present. Electoral officials were seen seated with materials arranged, waiting for more constituents to arrive and cast their ballots.
Security personnel were strategically deployed across the area to maintain order and ensure the safety of voters and election officials. Observers noted a strong security presence, even though turnout remained sparse in several locations.
The development has added to concerns about voter participation and the overall conduct of the by-election, as residents continue to monitor the situation.
