Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has urged Nigerians to collectively vote for democracy and return the country to a truly democratic nation. In a statement marking Nigeria's Democracy Day, Obi emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of citizens, obeying laws, and ensuring accountability from leaders. He lamented the current state of the nation, citing leadership failures, systemic corruption, and high levels of insecurity, poverty, and hunger.
Obi highlighted several ratings that indicate Nigeria is not truly democratic, including a low democracy index score, high corruption perception index, and poor rule of law measurement. He also noted the country's ranking as one of West Africa's most dangerous and difficult countries for journalists and its high hunger index.
The former governor of Anambra State urged all Nigerians to respect and protect government institutions, obey the laws of the nation, and fulfill the responsibilities of responsible governance. He concluded by emphasizing that it is possible for Nigeria to return to a truly democratic nation, citing the country's achievement of democracy on June 12, 1993, as an example.
