Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Nigeria, particularly following the abduction of over 200 school children in Kaduna State. Obi described it as unacceptable that Nigerian children are unable to learn in a secure environment due to criminal activities.
The Labour Party leader urged relevant authorities to spare no effort in ensuring that children can attend school and learn in a safe atmosphere. He emphasized the need for citizens to be able to worship and conduct their businesses without fear or hindrance.
In a statement on X, the former Anambra State governor lamented the recent surge in killings, terror attacks, and abductions in the country, calling for more concerted efforts to combat the menace. He expressed bewilderment at the abduction in Kaduna State, which boasts the highest number of military and security institutions in Nigeria.
Obi stressed the urgency of implementing better security measures to prevent future abductions and other security challenges. He highlighted the severe impact of insecurity on education, noting that Nigeria already faces the challenge of over 18 million out-of-school children due to previous school closures caused by insecurity.
The former presidential candidate appealed to the government at both state and federal levels to explore all avenues to secure the safe release of the abducted school children. He called on all Nigerians to unite and pray for the nation's security, emphasizing the need for leaders to ensure that Nigerian children have the opportunity to pursue their dreams in a safe and secure nation.
