Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, has issued a public apology after an altercation with Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North/South, Abia State. Abuwatseya expressed regret over the incident, which occurred during a package delivery in Abuja and resulted in a viral video showing Ikwechegh striking him.
In a statement released Thursday, Abuwatseya apologized, acknowledging that his actions may have provoked the lawmaker. He urged Nigerians to look beyond tribal and religious divides, advocating for forgiveness and unity.
The incident took place on October 28, when Ikwechegh, who had ordered snails from a vendor, reportedly became incensed after Abuwatseya requested that he come outside to collect his delivery. In the video, Ikwechegh can be heard expressing frustration, insisting the driver’s request was disrespectful and making threatening remarks.
Following public backlash, Ikwechegh issued an apology on social media, admitting that his reaction was inappropriate and acknowledging the expectations of his office as a public servant. He apologized to Abuwatseya, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly for his conduct.
Abuwatseya thanked his family and supporters for standing by him, while calling for forgiveness and moving past the incident.
