The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 13 suspects linked to the violent clash that erupted in Ogheghe community, Upper Siluko Road, Benin City, following the killing of a 23-year-old man, Chigozie Ifeonu.
The unrest began on Wednesday after Ifeonu was reportedly stabbed to death during an argument over a failed motorcycle transaction. His death triggered outrage, as angry youths armed with dangerous weapons took to the streets in an attempt to avenge him.
Eyewitnesses said the situation quickly spiraled out of control, with several people injured during the confrontation between local youths and members of the Hausa community. Policemen later arrived at the scene, firing teargas to disperse the mob and restore calm.
One resident said, “I can’t say exactly what caused the stabbing, but it started after a deal went wrong between the deceased and a Hausa youth. The fight turned into chaos, with Benin boys and Hausa youths clashing violently. Many of the Hausa traders and Okada riders fled the area for safety.”
Another source explained that the dispute began after Ifeonu tried to recover a motorcycle he had given to the suspect on hire purchase, but the suspect allegedly fled with it. When the deceased confronted him, he was stabbed in the chest.
A video circulating online showed parts of the Hausa settlement in the area set ablaze, while some youths were seen beating two men with wooden planks.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the victim was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
