Police Arrest 20 Suspected Cultists Linked to Officer’s Killing in Ogun

Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command in Onikan, Lagos, have arrested 20 suspected cultists believed to be connected to the murder of a police officer and other violent crimes in Ilesi, near Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.

The spokesperson for the command, Umma Ayuba, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday.

According to her, the attack happened on November 29 around 9:30 pm, when suspected members of the Neo Black Movement (Aye Confraternity) stormed the Ilesi area to retaliate against a rival group.

During the invasion, the armed cultists opened fire after being spotted by the officer and other residents. The officer was killed instantly, while two residents sustained serious injuries. In a shocking act, the attackers amputated the officer’s left hand and fled with it.

Ayuba said operatives of the Zonal Dragon Squad immediately launched an intelligence-led operation.

In the early hours of December 1, officers raided a suspected hideout in the Ogbere area of Ogun, arresting 20 suspects believed to be involved in the attack and other crimes, including illegal possession of firearms.

Recovered items included:

A Nissan Micra vehicle

Two short guns (double- and single-barrelled)

Two locally made pistols

29 live cartridges

19 mobile phones

N72,000 cash

Jewelry and ATM cards

One suspect remains on the run and is believed to be in possession of the officer’s amputated hand.

Ayuba added that security had been strengthened across communities affected by the incident.

AIG Adegoke Fayoade urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity, assuring that all those involved in the “heinous crime” will be brought to justice.
