In a decisive move to support the Federal Government's ease of doing business policy and combat economic sabotage, the Nigeria Police Force has arrested 20 suspects involved in unauthorized revenue collection and multiple taxation along the Enugu and Abakaliki-Ebonyi highways. The Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Muyiwa Adejobi, announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

The arrests represent a significant step toward eliminating illegal activities that hinder economic growth and ensuring the free movement of industrial and agricultural goods on highways across the country. ACP Adejobi stated that the police made the first breakthrough on August 24, 2024, with the arrest of 14 suspects at the Abakaliki and Ebonyi boundary at approximately 3 a.m.

Further operations led to the arrest of five additional suspects at Abumeje, Ogoja, and one last suspect at the Onuakpu area of Ebonyi. These suspects have been charged with economic sabotage and illegal taxation, while others are currently in custody at the Ebonyi Command, awaiting court appearances.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to dismantling all illegal revenue collection points and illegal taxation practices. He emphasized that these efforts are crucial to ensuring a safer and more secure environment for Nigerian citizens, particularly for business owners and traders.

This operation marks a strong start for the police in enforcing the Presidential order on the ease of doing business and the fight against illegal roadblocks, revenue collection, and multiple taxation on the highways. The police's actions are aimed at fostering economic development in Nigeria by removing barriers that obstruct free trade and movement.

The crackdown on illegal taxation on highways is expected to continue, with the police vowing to sustain their efforts in promoting a conducive business environment across the country.
