A suspected child thief identified as Lucky was apprehended on Wednesday by residents in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, after allegedly attempting to abduct a two-month-old baby, Eric Oghenevwede Oghenekparobo.
The incident occurred when Lucky reportedly entered a private residence and tried to make away with the sleeping infant. The baby’s mother, Mrs. Oke Oghenekparobo, spotted the intruder and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of neighbours who swiftly intervened.
“I saw a strange man walking out of our house with my son,” said the tearful 28-year-old mother. “He dropped the baby and ran, but neighbours chased and caught him.”
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the suspect initially tried to deny involvement, claiming the real culprit had escaped. However, a local youth recognized him, leading to his detention until police arrived.
“He even boasted that the police would release him,” an eyewitness said. “He wasn’t even remorseful.”
The timely arrival of police operatives from the Ughelli Area Command prevented the suspect from being lynched by an angry mob. He is currently in custody as investigations continue.
In a brief statement, the suspect denied the charges, claiming he was visiting a bricklayer friend and had no intention of abducting the child.
“I’m from Otovwodo and have children too. I don’t know why I’m being accused,” he said.
Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but sources confirm that the case is under active investigation to determine the motive and whether others were involved.
