Police Arrest Suspected Killer of Vigilante Member in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a man suspected to be responsible for the killing of a vigilante member, after being on the run since 2024.

The suspect, Sudais Zakari of Angwan-Roka, Minna, was arrested alongside Danjuma Idris of Maitumbi, both on suspicion of robbery.

Zakari is alleged to have fled after reportedly killing Ibrahim Yahaya, popularly known as Danladi Baushe, a vigilante member in Maitumbi, in April 2024. He was also accused of being involved in several armed robbery cases within the Maitumbi area in 2025.

Confirming the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspects were picked up during a raid carried out by officers attached to the Maitumbi Division.

According to Abiodun, the operation took place on February 7, 2026, around 10:30pm, when police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), alongside vigilante members, stormed criminal hideouts in the Maitumbi area.

During the raid, Zakari and Idris were arrested.

He explained that preliminary investigations revealed Zakari had been wanted for multiple crimes, including the alleged murder of the vigilante member in 2024 and participation in armed robbery incidents in 2025.

In a related development, the police spokesman added that another suspect, Aji Gana, was intercepted and arrested on February 8, 2026, around 3:00am, by an Operation Flush patrol team near the Maitumbi Roundabout.

Items recovered from him included a cutlass, a pitcher, a bunch of keys, pliers, screwdriver, and two mobile phones.
