A confrontation between members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and police officers erupted on Sunday, August 25, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), resulting in fatalities and injuries. The incident occurred around noon at the Wuse, Berger roundabout in Abuja as IMN members marched from Wuse to the roundabout during their Arba’een Symbolic Trek.
Eyewitnesses reported that the clash began when police started firing tear gas into the air to disperse the protesters. The situation quickly escalated, leading to the burning of two vehicles at the scene.
Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara Sokoto, a member of the IMN, claimed that the police attack resulted in the deaths and injuries of numerous mourners participating in the trek. He stated, "Police attacked the Arba’een Symbolic Trek in Abuja and killed numerous mourners. Security agents are currently arresting participants, and medical practitioners are attending to those critically injured."
Sokoto added that the IMN had taken precautions before the march to ensure the safety of participants and prevent any infiltration. He noted that similar treks conducted on Saturday in the Masaka and Zuba areas concluded peacefully.
Efforts to reach the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, for comments on the incident were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
The IMN, led by Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has been in the news for various reasons, often related to clashes with security forces during their religious activities. The group plans to release more detailed information about the casualties and arrests in the coming days.
