The Presidency has dismissed concerns about distractions from the followers of Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the previous presidential election. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, criticized Obi for injecting religious and ethnic sentiments into politics, terming it a dangerous trend. Onanuga made these remarks during a podcast interview.
Obi's supporters, known as the Obidients, have been critical of the government's policies since Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed leadership. However, Onanuga stated that the administration is focused on governance and not on potential threats to Tinubu's 2027 presidential bid.
Onanuga also addressed allegations of intentional sabotage against the Tinubu administration, pointing out that some critics continue to question the legitimacy of Tinubu's presidency. He rejected claims that Tinubu used religious tactics, citing the selection of Vice President Shettima as a decision based on merit and not religious considerations.
Regarding comparisons between Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, Onanuga emphasized that it is premature to assess Tinubu's performance as he has only been in office for a short time. He acknowledged Buhari's efforts in infrastructure development and legal reforms, noting that both leaders have distinct approaches to governance.
In conclusion, the Presidency reiterated its commitment to governance and dismissed distractions from political opponents, emphasizing the need for a focus on national development.
