President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, who passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos at the age of 56 following an illness. The news was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Lt. General Lagbaja, appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, had a notable career in the Nigerian Armed Forces. Born on February 28, 1968, he began his military journey at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, graduating in 1992 and joining the Nigerian Infantry Corps as a Second Lieutenant. Over his 30-year career, he commanded various security operations across Nigeria, including Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.
A dedicated scholar and leader, Lt. General Lagbaja earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, underscoring his commitment to professional growth and strategic leadership.
He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, lauding Lt. General Lagbaja’s unwavering dedication to national service.
