President Bola Tinubu has approved a groundbreaking National Policy on Health Workforce Migration aimed at addressing Nigeria’s healthcare human resource challenges. Announced by Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, the policy is designed to tackle the ongoing migration of healthcare professionals and ensure a well-supported, adequately rewarded, and optimally utilized workforce.
The policy goes beyond immediate responses to migration issues by introducing a comprehensive strategy that includes the Nigeria Human Health Resource Programme. This initiative will regularly review working conditions and enhance recognition and rewards for health workers, particularly in underserved areas, to retain top talent within Nigeria.
Additionally, the policy emphasizes integrating advanced digital health technologies such as Electronic Medical Records and telehealth, which will improve healthcare delivery and workforce distribution. Capacity building and continuous professional development are central to the policy, featuring international training opportunities to equip healthcare professionals with cutting-edge skills.
To address the diaspora issue, the policy includes measures for the return and reintegration of Nigerian health professionals from abroad, offering streamlined registration processes and attractive incentives. It also promotes reciprocal agreements with other nations to protect national interests while respecting healthcare professionals' rights. The policy aims to create a supportive work environment with provisions for health checks, mental well-being support, and reasonable working hours.
