In a recent meeting with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, David Lammy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged the United Kingdom to extend greater support to Africa’s peace and security challenges, particularly in conflict zones like Sudan. During discussions at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the ongoing security crisis in West Africa and the burden Nigeria faces from displaced persons, particularly from Mali and Burkina Faso.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of UK involvement, saying, “We urge Britain to give more attention to Africa, especially Sudan, alongside other global concerns. Humanity dictates attention to these issues, and we’re ready to collaborate.” He also expressed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the UK in areas impacting livelihoods, including trade, arts, and security.
Echoing these sentiments, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who also hosted Lammy, expressed readiness to deepen UK-Lagos cooperation, aligning with the state's growth strategy. Highlighting Lagos’s young, creative population, Sanwo-Olu stressed the city’s potential as a dynamic business hub, noting, “Lagos is an ideal location for expanded UK partnerships in trade, transportation, and economic development.”
David Lammy praised Lagos’s vibrancy, recognizing the city as a central economic engine not only for Nigeria but all of West Africa. "The UK is very much open for more business with our old friends," Lammy noted, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to fostering mutual economic growth across various sectors.
