President Bola Tinubu is set to inaugurate a day-long national dialogue on security and state police, organized by the House of Representatives on Monday, April 22. The House, in a statement by its spokesman, Akintunde Rotimi, disclosed that the dialogue aims to foster a comprehensive national discourse on the advantages and challenges of state police, with a focus on collating citizens’ opinions and insights.

The event, held in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), FCDO/UKAID, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), also seeks to propose models, institutional frameworks, and legal structures for the efficient implementation of state policing in Nigeria. Rotimi highlighted the alignment of this dialogue with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly House of Representatives, which seeks to address prevailing security challenges in Nigeria.

He quoted the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, stressing the imperative of the national dialogue, noting, “Insecurity in Nigeria demands urgent action and collective responsibility.” This forum provides a vital platform for constructive dialogue and actionable solutions to enhance our security architecture and ensure the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.

Scheduled to hold at the Abuja Continental Hotel (Former Sheraton Hotel & Tower), the event is expected to be graced by Senate President Godwill Akpabio, alongside former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, who will preside over various sessions during the dialogue. Rotimi urged participants to maximize this opportunity to fortify Nigeria’s security framework.
