Protesters Return to Abuja Streets, Demand End to Hunger and Fuel Subsidy Reinstatement

After a brief lull, protesters have returned to the streets of the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, reigniting demonstrations that had been paused following raids and arrests of organizers. The protests, which began on August 1, are expected to culminate today with a massive one million-man march across the country.

Ahead of the anticipated protest, heavy security presence was observed on Friday around the Central Business District and Eagles Square, where the number of security agents had noticeably increased compared to previous days. This heightened security came in response to the planned large-scale demonstration.

Early on Saturday morning, protesters gathered as early as 7 am, chanting slogans such as "End hunger" and "Reverse fuel subsidy removal," voicing their discontent with the government's economic policies. The demonstrations mark a significant resurgence of public dissent in the capital.
