Retired AIG leads probe into killings by Osun Amotekun

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appointed retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Wale Abbas, to lead the investigation into the alleged killing of three residents of Akinlalu town by operatives of the state’s Amotekun Corps.

Abbas, who currently chairs the Osun Amotekun Board, has been directed to ensure a thorough probe, including an investigation into the role of the Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, in the incident.

Governor Adeleke announced the development on Monday during a condolence visit to Akinlalu, assuring residents that justice would be served and that the injured victims would receive full medical care.

“On the demand for the suspension of Omoyele, we are working on it,” Adeleke said. “I have directed the Chairman of the Amotekun Board, Wale Abbas, to go to Abuja and ensure a thorough investigation. Those in the hospital are being properly taken care of, and the ventilator requested for the victims is already on the way. Their recovery is my top priority right now.”

The governor commended the community’s youths for maintaining peace despite their grief and urged them to remain calm as the investigation unfolds.

Earlier, the Youth Leader of Akinlalu, Musbau Adeboye, had called for the immediate suspension and investigation of Omoyele over the killings.

The tragic incident occurred on September 30, 2025, when Amotekun operatives reportedly stormed Akinlalu, shooting several residents and killing three people. The victims were later identified by the Osun State Police Command as Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo, while Adeagbo Kadijat (22), Oke-Ila Oyebamiji (60), and Fayomi Toheeb (19) sustained gunshot injuries.

Police reports also revealed that the Amotekun operatives allegedly removed the victims’ bodies from the scene.

While the Amotekun leadership admitted that three people were killed, it claimed the operatives acted in self-defence during an exchange of gunfire with hoodlums attempting to snatch their rifles.

Following the outcry, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, deployed a special team to take over the investigation. The team has since arrested five Amotekun operatives, though sources say Omoyele has yet to honour repeated police invitations to explain his role in the killings.
