Rivers Administrator Ibas Swears In Newly Elected LG Chairmen

The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (Rtd.), has sworn in the newly elected chairmen of the state’s 23 local government councils.

The ceremony, held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, came shortly after the chairmen received their certificates of return from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The local government elections, conducted by RSIEC on Saturday across more than 6,000 polling units, saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) secure a landslide victory, winning 20 chairmanship seats. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to clinch only three councils.

The APC also claimed majority control of the councillorship seats, winning in 20 LGAs, while the PDP secured three.

This marks the first time the APC has achieved political dominance in Rivers State since the return of democracy in 1999.

RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, officially declared the winners on Sunday at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. He noted that some of the elected chairmen are returning for a second term, having previously served under the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
