Six Dead, Eight Injured in Fatal Road Crash on Yobe’s Potiskum–Fika Road

The Yobe State Police Command has confirmed that six people have died and eight others injured in a fatal road accident along the Potiskum–Fika Road, near Maiduwa Junction.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the tragic incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on October 17.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident involved a Sharon bus with registration number PKM 549 YZ, driven by Adamu Hassan. The bus was traveling from Potiskum to Bajoga in Funakaye Local Government Area of Gombe State when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to somersault.

“Upon receiving the report, officers from the Motor Traffic Department of Fika Division rushed to the scene and evacuated both the injured and the deceased to the General Hospital, Fika, where a medical doctor confirmed the deaths of six victims,” the police statement said.

The police noted that efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased and contact their families.

SP Abdulkarim attributed the crash to overspeeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and possible drug use by commercial drivers.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.

He also warned motorists against unsafe driving practices, stressing that the police would strictly enforce traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.

“Drivers must avoid reckless behaviour on the road. Anyone found violating traffic laws will face appropriate sanctions,” he said.

The Command further called on motorists, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and other stakeholders to intensify road safety sensitization, particularly against drug abuse among commercial drivers.

Members of the public were also urged to report any cases of reckless or impaired driving to the nearest police station to enable swift action and prevent avoidable loss of lives.
