Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on community associations to foster peace and unity within their localities, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the state’s progress.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, made this appeal during the 2024 Community Day celebration held at the Police College ground, Ikeja. The event, organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, carried the theme: “Stronger Together, Building a Resilient Society.”
In his address, the governor lauded the annual event as a vital platform for recognizing the invaluable contributions of Community Development Associations (CDAs) to Lagos’ development.
“As we celebrate today, I urge Lagosians, represented by over 5,000 CDAs, to support our shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous Lagos,” he stated. “Let us stay vigilant and united against any actions that may jeopardize our investments, infrastructure, or heritage. The consequences of destabilization would be devastating for us.”
Commitment to Inclusive Development
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to addressing residents’ needs and ensuring inclusivity in governance. He highlighted the alignment of this year’s theme with the Lagos Resilience Strategy, which aims to build a more adaptable city capable of tackling local and global challenges.
Key initiatives introduced over the past five years to alleviate economic and social pressures include the EKO CARES program and the creation of the Non-Partisan Special Dispensation Advisory Council. This council, comprising rights activists, religious leaders, youth representatives, and opposition members, ensures fairness and inclusivity in the state’s developmental programs.
Call for Peaceful Coexistence
The governor emphasized the significance of peaceful coexistence, particularly in light of global uncertainties, urging Lagosians to unite regardless of their religious, cultural, or social differences.
“The strength of Lagos lies in its diversity and resilience. Together, we can continue to build a city that overcomes challenges and ensures a sustainable future for all,” he concluded.
The Community Day celebration drew participants from across the state, showcasing the vibrancy and commitment of CDAs to fostering harmony and progress in Lagos.
