In a recent development, both the Senate and House of Representatives have announced the postponement of their resumption dates from April 29 to May 6, 2025.
The decision was communicated through separate internal memoranda issued on April 20, 2025, by the Clerks to the respective Houses: Andrew Ogbonna Nwoba for the Senate and Dr. Yahaya Danzaria for the House of Representatives.
Originally, both chambers had adjourned their plenary sittings on March 27, 2025, with the resumption set for April 29, 2025, to allow members to participate in Sallah and Easter festivities. However, the newly scheduled resumption dates will now fall on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
According to Nwoba's memo to senators, the postponement is to enable members to remain in their constituencies during the International Workers' Day public holiday in the first week of May. The adjustment is also aimed at providing senators with more opportunities for constituency engagements. Nwoba expressed regret for any inconvenience this change may cause.
Similarly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria’s memo to the House of Representatives members outlined that the change would allow members to deepen their engagements with constituents in line with their representative duties. The memo assured members that the rescheduling was in line with the government’s commitment to enhancing the relationship between legislators and the electorate.
Both memoranda emphasized the importance of taking note of the new dates and adjusting their schedules accordingly. The leadership of both chambers reiterated their appreciation and respect for the members' understanding of the situation.
As a result of this shift, parliamentary activities are now expected to resume in both Houses on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
