Senate Approves N124.2bn 2024 Budget for Nigeria Police Trust Fund

Senate

The Senate on Wednesday approved the sum of ₦124.2 billion as the 2024 budget for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF).

The budget was passed following the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC, Oyo), during plenary.

According to Akintunde, the committee reviewed and endorsed the budget proposal, which allocates ₦1.2 billion for personnel costs and ₦98.6 billion for capital expenditures.

He noted that the bulk of the capital allocation would be directed toward training of police officers, rehabilitation and construction of police stations, barracks, and clinics across the country, as well as the procurement of compressed natural gas (CNG) and other operational needs.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the approved expenditures would significantly contribute to improving national security.

“The expenditures that we might hear from the Police Trust Fund should enhance security all over the nation,” Akpabio said. He further charged the committee to ensure strict oversight, emphasizing that every kobo appropriated must be used for the benefit of the police and the Nigerian people.

The passage of the NPTF budget comes amid rising concerns over internal security, with stakeholders calling for improved police welfare, infrastructure, and operational capacity.
