Vice President Kashim Shettima will stand in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 2023 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, from October 21 to 26. The meeting, themed "One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth," will focus on leveraging the collective strength of member countries. Discussions will revolve around resilience, the Commonwealth Advantage, and fostering digital and economic growth. Nigeria, as the largest African member, is expected to play a significant role in shaping these conversations.

A major highlight of CHOGM 2023 will be the election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General, with candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia. The selection follows the principle of regional rotation, with the position now expected to come from Africa. Vice President Shettima will join King Charles and other global leaders in these deliberations.
In addition to official discussions, Shettima will participate in the Commonwealth Business Forum, where he is expected to attract investors to Nigeria. He will also engage in the People’s Forum, the Commonwealth's largest platform for citizens to interact with world leaders, and hold several bilateral meetings.
