Simon Ekpa’s Arrest Sparks Global Reactions, Nigeria Seeks Extradition

Simon Ekpa

The arrest of Simon Ekpa, leader of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), by Finnish authorities on terrorism-related charges has ignited widespread reactions. Accused of inciting violence and financing terrorism in Nigeria’s South-East, Ekpa faces allegations of promoting violent activities through social media and enforcing the sit-at-home orders that have caused chaos in the region. Finnish police confirmed his detention alongside four others suspected of financing terrorism.

The Federal Government has signaled plans to extradite Ekpa to Nigeria to face justice. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, expressed satisfaction with the development, emphasizing that Ekpa’s trial is a crucial step in addressing security challenges. Many Nigerians online have also demanded his repatriation, citing the extensive damage his actions have caused.

While IPOB has distanced itself from Ekpa, maintaining that he is not associated with its operations or its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, stakeholders like the Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa, and political commentators have applauded his arrest. The Indigenous People of Biafra reiterated their call for Kanu’s release, asserting that he is unlawfully detained despite court rulings in his favor.

Ekpa’s activities have been linked to numerous violent incidents, including attacks on civilians, authorities, and public infrastructure. His arrest highlights international collaboration in combating terrorism and underscores the Nigerian government’s determination to restore peace and stability in the South-East.
