Six persons were rescued on Wednesday after a two-storey building collapsed on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., comes barely two weeks after four people died in a similar collapse at No. 325 Bornu Street, Ebute Meta.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other first responders swiftly arrived at the scene.
“The LASEMA and other first responders got to the scene in good time and rescued a trapped victim and five others from the rubble,” Omotoso said.
According to him, the five victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, while the trapped victim, a 44-year-old man who sustained fractures and bruises, was transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Surgical Emergency unit. He was said to be in stable condition upon arrival.
The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined, but government officials have launched an investigation.
The latest incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations in Lagos, a state grappling with recurring building collapses. In July, four people narrowly escaped death when a three-storey building gave way along Adeniji-Adele Road in Isale Eko.
