Sokoto Reaffirms Commitment to Social Protection Amid Security Challenges

The Sokoto State Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening social protection programmes aimed at reducing poverty and supporting vulnerable residents, despite ongoing security concerns across the state.

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Zayyana, made this known during a two-day validation workshop on the review of the state’s Social Protection Policy held in Birnin Kebbi.

According to him, social protection remains a key pillar of the state’s development agenda, especially as insecurity continues to worsen economic conditions for many citizens.

“Social protection is one of the most critical sectors for the development of the state. Despite our efforts, insecurity caused by banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping has increased displacement, food insecurity, and other socio-economic challenges,” he said.

Zayyana expressed optimism that the review process would produce a more effective and realistic policy framework capable of addressing current challenges and improving the welfare of residents.

He also commended development partners for their continued support in advancing social programmes in the state.

Representatives from partner organisations noted improvements in areas such as healthcare, education, and support programmes for women and children, while reaffirming their commitment to supporting the state.

Participants were encouraged to contribute meaningful recommendations to strengthen the policy before its final submission, with the goal of improving service delivery to vulnerable households across Sokoto State.
