Speaker

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, expressed concern over Nigeria's ongoing challenges with poverty, unemployment, and inequality, despite efforts by both the executive and legislative branches. His address, delivered by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu at the commencement of the second session of the House, emphasized the high expectations constituents have for their representatives.

“The expectations of our constituents remain high, and they look up to us to address pressing issues such as security, economy, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The gains of democracy must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of our citizens,” Tajudeen stated.

He reminded his colleagues that the legislature is central to Nigeria’s democracy, ensuring that the aspirations and interests of Nigerians are represented, laws are made for peace and progress, and the executive is held accountable. He praised the dedication and integrity of the 10th House during its first session, highlighting the robust debates, crucial legislation, and thorough oversight that have marked their work.

Legislative Achievements

Tajudeen noted that the House introduced 1,351 bills in its first session, the highest number since 1999, with 89 bills passed. Key legislations included:

Access to Higher Education Act, 2024 (Students Loan Bill)
Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023
Federal Audit Service Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023

Additionally, 679 motions were introduced, setting a record for the first session. The Speaker underscored the importance of oversight, which has led to recovering misappropriated funds and rectifying administrative inefficiencies.

Challenges and Future Goals

Despite the progress, Nigeria continues to grapple with significant challenges. Tajudeen called for continued efforts to enact laws promoting economic growth, social justice, and environmental sustainability. He stressed the need to strengthen institutions, enhance legislative processes, and foster collaboration with civil society and the private sector.

“As legislators, we are aware that our work is far from complete. We must continue to enact laws that promote economic growth, social justice, and environmental sustainability. In this regard, we must strengthen our institutions and enhance our legislative processes.”

To mark the end of the first session and the commencement of the second, the House plans to hold its first-ever House open week. The event will feature the presentation of the House’s scorecard, hosting prominent Nigerians and former presiding officers, and various engagements to discuss strategic legislative priorities.
