The University of Lagos (UNILAG) experienced disruption on Wednesday as non-academic staff unions initiated a seven-day warning strike. This action was in compliance with the directive from the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU, stemming from the non-payment of four months' withheld salaries.
President Bola Tinubu had directed in October 2023 that university workers who went on a prolonged strike in 2022 should be paid for four months. In response, the UNILAG branch of SSANU and NASU locked one of the main gates, affecting vehicular access and causing congestion along the UNILAG route.
The closure of the gate also impacted academic activities, with some lecture halls and offices remaining locked. Members of the unions gathered at the gate for a peaceful protest, holding placards demanding the immediate payment of their withheld salaries.
Placards bore messages such as "Pay us our money!", "JAC Demands the immediate payment of withheld salaries," and "FGN pay our four months' salaries without delay!" The strike action disrupted normal operations at UNILAG, drawing attention to the grievances of the non-academic staff.
