Suicidal Abuja Protester Released from Custody, enabled to start Pos Business

Shaibu Yusuf, who threatened suicide by climbing the Aso Radio and TV mast in Abuja on July 8 to protest against insecurity and economic hardship, has been released from detention by the FCT Police Command. His release was confirmed by Abuja-based lawyer Deji Adeyanju.

Yusuf's protest involved scaling a broadcast mast owned by Aso Television and Radio in Katampe, Abuja, to highlight the suffering of Nigerians. He demanded a state of emergency in several states over insecurity and urged the government to take action against terrorists and address food shortages and out-of-school children.

The intervention of Florence Dawon Wenegieme, acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), convinced Yusuf to descend from the mast. He had observed the mast for about a week before deciding to climb.

Following his release, Adeyanju announced that he and FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ben Igwe, would support Yusuf in starting a Point of Sale (PoS) business to help him sustain himself. Adeyanju appreciated the collaborative efforts of the FCT Police Command and the FCT Social Development Unit in securing Yusuf's release.
